Interactive: Jobless rate for people like you

Really impressed by this NYT interactive. Its subheadline says not everyone has felt the recession equally, and after a couple minutes, that becomes pretty clear. For example, women exactly like me in every way but skin color have much worse unemployment rates. Since education level was the same, I was really surprised by that. Maybe I shouldn’t have been … For the record, highest rate went to black men 15-24 without HS; lowest, white women 25-44 with college.

The rise of Twitter and Facebook has been well-chronicled the past few years. But too much of the discussion about these sites focuses on how they’ve disrupted traditional media companies. …

But the rise of social networking has also created one major advantage for media companies that isn’t much discussed: the fact the news consumption has now become seamlessly blended into the daily lives of so many consumers. …

Does this phenomenon present advertising challenges? Of course. Has it contributed to declining value of many news brands? Absolutely. But this is the direction news consumption is headed, and failing to acknowledge that may be fatal for many news organizations.

A-men! So tired of all the focus on negatives, especially when the negativism obscures the truth. A little sunshine never hurt anyone.
